Level 18 Jabber vs. Zealot? |
|
I'm looking around at the various level 18 guides, and was considering MysticFalcon's Jabber guide (I'm on an Amazon kick at the moment), but I find myself looking at the numbers on the build, and wondering how in the hell it could defeat a level 18 zealot (seemingly the most common opponent at this level). I mean, on the one hand you have:
5 fast attacks
+300% damage or so (not including various items)
versus
3 fast attacks
-15% damage
Granted, the Amazon can expect the occasional Deadly Strike double damage, and will have a nifty 40% or so Dodge, but can that really compare to a halfway decent Zealot? I love Paladins and all, but I'm loathe to build one if they're the most repetitively built LLD 18 build out there. However, I don't want to gear up a losing proposition...

I'd think a zon would need very good gear/charms to consistently beat a decent zealot. Mostly, it's just the eth war javs that are needed IMO.

if you are looking for a sure thing, a character that will win consistantly, and you dont want to spend alot on gear/spend alot of time looking for the perfect gear, build a zealot.
if you dont mind losing in the process of making him better, and you like the challenge of making a character as perfect as you can, with rare and hard to find items, make a jabberzon.

Yeah, see - that seems to be the crux of the problem. I love Paladins, but I hate just being "one of the crowd"; i.e. just cranking off another cookie-cutter, mindless, easily-made and mostly undefeatable build. (This is why I never made a hammerdin, although an LLD hammer might be kind of interesting.)
I don't want a "sure thing", but I also don't want to build and gear a character that can't expect at least a 50/50 chance going into a duel. I've been playing with the skills calculator, and looking over various build ideas: jabber, CS zon, smiter, kicker, bear, wolf, conc barb, etc etc; but it still comes back to whether or not any of these builds has a chance against a moderately well-built zealot.

I built a lvl 18 smiter a-la Jerkazoid style, and it's pretty even between me and the zealots I duel. The only annoying thing is they call me a noob for using a smiter (and spending a fraction of what they did to make my dueler )

if you want a character that isnt as common as a zealot, but not as expensive as a zon, and will still kill relatively persistantly, build a conc barb.

I agree with Voices 100%. I'm a zon lover but it's soooooo hard to get good weapons for them in LLD. Everything that's good is always lvl33-38 Took me 6 months of imbues and rerolling to get a poon with good damage at lvl 30. Another thing is her weapons don't have sockets.... so when I say a good damage weapon I mean something that will compete with all the 5-6 socket ones that other chars can equip. If you want a zon .Start collecting her stuff and saving for when you FINALLY get the l337 stix!!!

I had a zon with some eth war java's with 119ed 10 max dmg and ar but they were lvl 19 req so I had to over lvl by 1. I had all 15 life scs excluding a Max Dmg//Ar//Fhr or two that I needed, and all 15-18 max dmg gear. I had about 950 life and 2.7k Ar. The most annoying thing was that every once in a while I'd lose to zealots that only had about 450-500 life just bc of the High damge they could deal. The good Zealots (matic, Saytun, Ect. at the time) had so much life and dmg that I couldn't Consistantly win and it pretty much came down to pure block//Dodge luck if I did. I'd say I prally won about 1/3 of the time which I guess isnt' to bad but it was Very very random dueling. Sometimes my dodge would be Great and I'd win 6, 7, 8 duels in a row then turn around and lose every duel for the next 20 mins : / . Somthing you might want to try is using 3//xx//15 Lc's rather than 15 life scs bc even with all 15 life sc's I'd die in 3-4 hits and zons hit Alot bc of Innersight + good Ar +Fast attack. I quit lvl 18ing bc of the Complete randomness of the duels. I'm not sure if any of this helps you any but I can say that I loved dueling with my zon a lot more than my pally even though my pally would Stomp my zon nearly every duel.

Rancid

Yeah, that's the problem I'm having. I'll win easily against most any pub dueler, but because of my lack of really good life/damage charms, I get owned by most anyone with a well-built zealot, unless I'm lucky with the blocks and dodge...
Maybe I'll just give in and make a Zealot. =)
