So im going to start imbuing eth ornate plates looking for a rep mod.
Does it matter which difficulty that I imbue them in? Also does the character level matter? I figured I'd make about 5x different accounts and have a friend just kill the "The Smith" for me in Normal.
Is this a good plan, or should I go to NM or Hell?

You'll end up with low ed if you do.

the ornates alvl never raise above alvl32 until its ilvl> 64. an imbue from 8-60 makes no difference.

this means by default the ornate gets alvl 32 unlocked no matter what. (bc alvl = qlvl *.5 IF ilvl < qlvl, qlvl of ornates is 64)
no matter what, the orante is capable of getting upto "saintly" 80%ed

heres calc link to verify, (edit: i missed saintly when first checking bc of the gap as you can see Embarassed )
http://diablo3.ingame.de/spiel/expansion/itemdb/affix_display.php?lang=en&version=lod&patch=111&type=tors&item=Ornate+Plate&sortby=group&mlvl=0&qlvl=64&ilvl=1
if a 80% +rep is good enough no need to level.
this will be 1:25 odds for a combination of 41% upto 80% +a repair mod
(1:8 chance for repair)

if u want the possibility of holy 81-100% u must use a clvl of 64 (or higher) as mung said
clvl 64 imbue create ilvl 68 which will unblock alvl 36 on ornates
http://diablo3.ingame.de/spiel/expansion/itemdb/affix_display.php?lang=en&version=lod&patch=111&type=tors&item=Ornate+Plate&sortby=group&mlvl=0&qlvl=64&ilvl=68
there is 1:23 odd for the following combontaion 41% upto 100% + any rep mod
(1:9 chance for repair)

conclusions

for shear chances of repair, the imbue at clvl 8-60 is more likely

for better chance of the two (rep + ed%) and to get "holy" upto 100% perfect, use clvl 64

so its a matter of time vs desire and what you want more,
rep mod or better ed%?
Cool

and learn to use the calc bc it will answer so many questions you have Wink
