Most people I know who joined the military regretted it as well. But no one I know who served and left has said "man, I really wish I hadn't joined up."

So you may go through a phase of not liking it, but ultimately you'll be glad you did it.

Now go out there and PK some nub foreigners.

they already told me if combat was what i was looking for...then i was out of luck with the career i was choosing. It was pretty funny. School is pretty much what my military career will consist of...which is what i planned on doing anyway. Now i just dont have to worry about having a place to live, food to eat, or finding a job...and im getting payed.

Sounds like your friends are punks. Explains a lot though.

Everyone goes through the "that fucking recruiter lied to me" stage, it's mostly due to shock.

About the only place they get in your face is in basic training..Because I played by the rules and really wanted to get into the next four years my company c.o. didn't even know my name for the first 2 weeks until I was named rcpo for hard work and laying low..I graduated from basic training as an e-3..All my enlistment was carrier duty except for a 9 month stint at Olangopo Naval Air Station..Since all my work was on the flight deck the only schools I attended were fire fighting and bomb n' missile disposal schools..
Have a positive attitude, pay attention (your instructors are real pros) and dont listen to the losers..yeah there their to..GL in your new career.. Very Happy

Political debates can be fun.

Except we haven't been in a war where are freedoms were in jeopardy.

WW1? No, we joined because other factors.

WW2? No, Japan bombed us because we cut off their oil.

Korea/Vietnam/Iraq/Iraq again? No.

Don't give me this, our soldiers fight for our freedoms. They fight for politics... especially this war. This war has nothing to do with our freedoms at all. But ya, propaganda can be fun.

I might disagree on this point. Countering the spread of Nazi/Fascist imperialism was probably a wise idea. While we can debate the reasons for getting into the war, we can likely all agree that limiting totalitarianism is a Good Thing. Isolationism helped us, but inevitably it would have come to our shores. (If for no other reason than that we were partially to blame for Germany's sorry state after WWI.)

People fight wars for many reasons. Your cynicism isn't entirely misplaced, but there were good reasons for going into all but Vietnam and Iraq2. And I noticed you left off Afghanistan, which was a conflict we were entirely justified, and even lauded, for fighting.

Having a standing military isn't simply about protecting freedoms for Americans. It is about advancing our ideals and protecting our interests throughout the world. This has *always* been the job of a nation's army. All war is political; it's the nature of war.

At least, until the aliens invade.

I think Grim's just pointing out how the common retort to most anti-war arguments is some sort of rhetorical "Well it's because of them that you're even allowed to protest right now!" kind of comment. In recent years, our freedoms weren't in any sort of immediate jeapordy in the sense that a lack of action would have caused us to be taken over by crazy dictators that wouldn't let us speak. Ironically, it's been our own government that has had the most nay-saying in our freedoms lately.

Not to say that a standing army and involvement in war doesn't serve a valid purpose, and that Grim is being a bit of a douche about it.
