I still like holy freeze/inisight merc. If you play a cold sorc you get used to freezing enemies. Cold immunes that can't be frozen will catch you off guard if you merc's aura doesn't slow them down (plus he has an easier time making kills with the enemy being slow).

Not sure how much you want to put into CM eventually but you want more than 1pt. If your going lightning tree for second element definately get atleast 1pt into TS & mastery. TS is decently effective with just 1pt into it and mastery, leaving you with your choice of lightning spell to pump.

orb + static is the best cheap rusher... it allows you to put a bunch into warmth or tele to reduce mana costs or to put it into telek to use ES... your merc will do fine against anything that's been static'd 10 times... which with even 75 cast with a decent static is easy as hell to do... i would suggest a might merc until you can afford a decent weapon for him though
