ok, my dad told me this a few months ago, it took me about 20 min to figure out. out of all the people he's told, i was the only one to figure it out (yes, i'm proud of myself Smile

). i've been telling people this problem and have yet to come across someone who could figure it out.

anyway, here are the givens:
you have two pieces of rope, each of different lengths.
each rope is non-uniform in thickness (in other words, the rope gets thicker and thinner as you go down the length of the rope, with no pattern - it's completely random).
you have a box of matches (infinite supply, have some fun Wink

)
each rope when let from one end will burn for an hour.

now, given all that information, i want you to tell me how you would time 45 minutes using only the materials mentioned above (no, you don't have a watch, no you can't pawn the rope and matches and buy a watch, no).

go.

Just measure the rope into one fourths each piece would be 15 minutes each. So 3/4 would be 45 minutes.

ok bend rope number 1 in half and then half again light it from both ends (so four sections are now butning and light rope number 2 from only one end, when rope number 1 burns completely it meets in the middle that has been 15 minutes, the other rope has 45 minutes left..

id probably just cheat. pull the strands apart, and re-braid the rope so its equal thickness all around...then do the folding and burning...

haha, how do you think the rope is non-uniform in thickness in the first place? non-uniform strands. Wink

Lit one rope from both ends, and another rope from one end, all at the same time. When the rope burned from both ends is totally consumed, lit the other end of another rope. When the second rope is totally consumed, it's 45 minutes.

i have heard this riddle before, only one rope burned in 1 hour, and the other rope burned in 30 minutes, are you sure that you told it right?
and edit, maybe there are 2 versions of this riddle, cause meitou's answer seems right enough to me, but the other version has a right answer too

light one from both ends. when it's done, light the other from both ends.
