How to Fix a PS2 Subject description: help! |
|
Ironically, this is pretty much an identical question as this thread: http://www.lld101.com/viewtopic.php?t=31761
Only this is about a PS2.
My g/f's PS2 recently is acting funny. It starts up fine, plays fine for about 3-5 minutes, and then shuts off without warning, causing the little green light that indicates that it is on to flash red.
I'm sure she doesn't have the instruction manual, and I'm not sure which cable is the AV cable which Grim mentioned. We tried messing with the connections, making sure they are all plugged in well.
We just bought Guitar Hero, and we really want to play it for more than half a song. If anyone can help out, I'd really appreciate it.

My ps2 has been busted for almost a year now. One of my little sisters friends stepped on it. Now, it turns on but doesnt post....it's just a black screen. Also, the cd tray won't come out
I've been looking around for places to get it repaired but i've not had any luck :S
Knarl:
It is DEFINATLEY overheating..my friend had the same problem. Open it up and clean out the fan with some compressed air, and any other dust you may see. That should solve the problem, did the trick for my buddy.

Another thing you might want to do is put a cd lens cleaner disk in there after you do what FUDGEsicle said. I had this problem 2 years ago, and after I did the compressed air it wouldn't read games, dvds, or cds until I cleaned the laser lense.

spit on the lense and rub it with a kleenex...spit works remarkably well for cleaning cd scratches and lenses, dont waste your money on fancy cleaners

Is it overheating even if it's hardly ever used? We used it for the first time in weeks and it did this within a period of 5 minutes of play or less.
How easy is it to open it up? I don't have it with me so I don't know what to look for.

Knarl the AV cables are the Audio/Video ones (Multi-colored). To easily fix your Ps2 dilemna, pick it up, turn it on its side, and smash it on the ground. Repeat process about 2-3 times.
Then buy one of the following.
N64
Xbox
Xbox 360
Playstation
Snes
Nes
Sega Genesis
Dreamcast
Any other GOOD system.
Wait until Wii, or buy a Ps3 to sell on EBay (like me!).

I remember the good 'ole Atari days. You could fix EVERY problem with a piece of aluminum foil. [/fogey]

Too young to have Atari, but I do remember the good ol computer games... I just re-downloaded Champions of Krynn (One of the best RPGs ever made... it's free download now because of abandonware). Nostaglia rules.

Ok seriously though. How do you open it up? Because my g/f's sister's b/f couldn't figure it out. I haven't had a chance to take a look at it, but they took it in to some gaming place and they said it had to be sent in for repairs, ranging from 50-90 dollars. They said it might be a motor problem. Is that something I can fix myself?

on the bottom of the ps, there are little rubber feet things. Just pop those out with a kitchen knife or something (don't worry, they pop right back in) and underneath them are screws.
undo the screws and keep working you way until you can get at the power supply fan, then give the WHOLE inside a good spray with the compressed air

if you always mess up, you can just buy a new/used slim ps2 for less than the repair cost.

Perfect. That's what I needed to know. Thanks a ton.
And I just checked ebay, and you're totally right Knifer. Heck, you can get a used one with 2 controllers, some games, and memory cards for less than the repair cost.

Opening it will void the warrenty, but i guess that doesnt matter at this point:)
Nail varnish remover also works well on the laser lens thing. I think all ps2's have problems with disc reading after about a year, cleaning the lens fixes it.
Although that doesnt seem your problem it would be a good idea to clean it anyway.
