I borrowed GW from my friend so I could try it out and see if I want to buy it or not, but when I installed it, and tried to create a new account, it said that the CD key was in use.

Does it only allow the CD key to be used on one computer? Or what?

He wasn't playing at the same time either, I was just trying to do it by myself.

I think the first account created with that cd key is linked to it. So the only way is to use his account. I havent played Guild Wars since beta testing but I think thats what it is.

What Shieron says is correct, the account is linked to the cd key, however, if you ever needed to, you can change the account for that specifi cd key, only one account per cdkey.
