MTG: my Thron Elemental deck |
|
I was digging through my cards yesterday and i found my old thorn elemental deck, I however started looking through the deck and it was made completely of cards from torment and 7th edition and earlier. so i started fiddling around and made it alot better but i still have 1 problem with it.
Deck:
Lands
Treetop Village x4
Forest x16
Creatures
Elvish Pioneer x4
Ironshell Beetlex4
Lone Wolf x4
Thorn Elemental x4
Spells
Dwell on the past x4
Naturalize x4
Nourish x4
Blanchwood Armor x4
Explosive Vegetation x4
Rancor x4
Ok so here's the problem with this deck, like many others a good affinity deck still beats me. After palying a couple dozen games at friday night magic and stuff i decided to remove the Rancors and maby the Ironshell beetles in favor of something ealse. To replace the Ironshell Beetles i was thinking maby Tangle Asp or something that can attack directly like Throny and Lone Wolf. As for the Rancors I'm not sure what to replace them with between the Elvish Pioneers and the Explosive Vegatations. i have enought manna acceleration and my manna curve is at 2.6 manna atm w/ the Rancors (Which is nearly perfect) this deck has life gain and Artifact/Enchantment destruction big creatures, manna acceleration, Treetop Village is also a really good card, Blanchwood Armors to power up throny and lone wolf and just to make sure that nothing is ever gone long i threw in those Dwell on the Past. thats my deck I'm currently working on i need to make it viable vs. affinity. I lose to them every time but not by much . so i might replace the Rancors with more artifact destruction.
So,
Any suggestions?
Oh, Btw here's a website if you dont know what all of these cards are.
http://www.cardkingdom.com/index.php?sid=995878524&main=catalog&catalog_id=125
Type in the name of the card in the seach bar in the upper right hand corner.

Ok so, your problem is simple...
For a simple beat down deck, you don't have enough creatures.
16 creatures, 12 of them pointless. Your only win condition is a thorn elemental which is actually a pretty bad card. Mana accel isn't going to help that much if you only have 4 cards in the deck that need it.
Unfortunately I would say scrap the deck, because imo any decent deck could easily handle it.
Are you losing to artifiact affinity? Using Ravager/artifact lands/cranial plating/and disciple of the vault? Affinity can be annoying... but adding in more artifiact hate main deck is just a waste vs other decks.

Well believe it or not affinity is the only thing i lose to but this is just a deck to play around w/ but i dont see how thorny is bad.
a 7/7 for 7 manna that can attack as though it werent blocked.
But i might just scrap the deck and make a new 1 to play around with. anyway i dont see how 12 of them are usless.
Thorny is good. the lone wolfs are exactly the same things but a bit weaker the elvish pioneers are manna excel i can drop thorney on turn 3 blanc wood him on turn 4 and usally win. but the ironsheelbeetle i see as usless and i might just remove the rancors and add in 4 more creatures.

There is too much removal that can deal with thorn elemental to make it a bad card, same with the wolves. Because you play green, you want them to block, giving you the ability to cast spells like giant growth, getting rid of their creatures while preserving your own. Any good deck can remove thorn pretty easily.
If anything, Rhox is a better card than Thorn. If affinity is the only deck than can beat you, then you're really not playing against any good players.

Affinity isnt even std anymore. And ext its nearly dead. That deck isnt standard either, but in ext, it has absolutely NO winning matches. 'tog would kill it, same with beats, same with madness.

Look up the cards "Pattern of Rebirth", and "Natural Order", and put 4 Spore Frogs in there. And Fogs to stall.
And LifeLine's if you have them. Lifeline + Spore Frog = <3
Then it would look something like my Thorn Elemental deck, which hardly ever loses.

You're playing beats. Why would you ever play moments peace? THat is a combo card/control card.

Because it will take him awhile to get the cards he needs out. 5-6th turn, by then most decks will already have creatures that would be attacked each turn, like my white deck.
So he attacks with with the 2 thorns, I let em through and attack next turn (since he's tapped out) with 5 knight for game, he fogs/moments peace and bam, he lives the next turn to attack again.
I'm still going to say that thorn elemental decks don't work. It'd be too slow against my red, since I usually pull off a 5th turn win and my knight deck (white) eats almost every straight beat down deck. Especially thorn, all I need is 3x knights and a crusade (which I always get almost every game). Kills thorn before he can do damage to me, or I have alot of removal like most white decks.
If you're going to make a green beat down deck, you should put in lure and venom.

If youre making a green beats, you dont want lure/venom. You want moldervine cloak, mongrel, elephant guide, CoTH.

If you're making green beats, you want lure at least, and venom is just an added bonus.
