secret of mana pwns all. my best friend and i played that game (and beat it) before we could read all of the text in the game...and we were both in the smart kid thing in our elementary school so we weren't dumb. i probably wasted over half of my life on that game before i was 12 years old. and i now have the rom on my computer, cuz i cant find the cartridge for my snes.
note, the first time we beat it, we didnt know what the mana magic did so we didnt use it...that was a 3-4 hour battle...or more...
for those who havent played, its a half-our fight with the mana magic cast on your sword. makes it horrible uber godly. and we pwnt flamie w/o it. bitch.

Played Chrono Cross before chrono trigger and I thought at the time trigger was alot better
then played Chrono Cross AGAIN and in my own opinion its way better than trigger a 2nd time it has a excellent story and plot and the storyline can change every single time you play it depending on where you go and what characters you put into your party. Tried playing trigger a 2nd time and I got bored as soon as I reached the future the first time.
Kingdom Hearts is also a very nice game although never wanted to play a 2nd time but maybe its because I spent so long playing it once getting to level 99 and beating almost every single competition and challenge (EXCEPT getting the ultimate weapon I cant get those mystery goo's)

My own top 5:
#5-HELLO WAKE UP!!! DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS!! DUH!!pen&paper ^.^
#4-FF7 And Tatics
#3-Super Mario Rpg
#2-Morrowind
and finally the best ever
#1-Everquest
Anyways, I know alot dont get into EQ, but back in the day it was ALOT better, you can ask break about all that, hah me and him had like a 2 hour convo about old school EQ in d2 one day after i pissed him off for the 14th time or so ^.^
And also.. i cant believe you left out dungeons and dragons.. the father of all roleplaying.. i mean when you sign up for a sex site, and it asks do you lie roleplay.. what wouldnt even be there if it wasnt for D&D so cmon.. show some respect
Also i have to say the best Super nintendo game was by far super mario rpg, while my copy was stolen from me, right before i could finish everything in the game (i.e. killing that ultimate guy in that one town.. i forgot him anem but you fight him out in space or something) I still think it was the best ever for Snes!
Morrowind is by far the best single player rpg of our time.
And ff7, and tatics are my two favorite playstation games of all time.
Im an RPG junkie!

MY personal Favorite: Legend Of Dragoon. the story was simply amazing. the graphics and sound (actually it was just the battle music that was annoying) werent the best, but there's more to games then just graphics.
Other Great RPGs
-Final Fantasy II (SNES)
-Final Fantasy III (SNES)
-Final Fantasy VII
-Lunar (playstation version)
-Lunar2 (playstation version)
-Xenogears
-Xenosaga 1
-Xenosaga 2

Heh. I've been playing pen & paper RPGs for... holy crap, 20 years. I started in fourth grade with "Star Frontiers" and "Marvel Super Heroes". I've been rockin' the stealth nerd action since before most of y'all were born.
But Morrowind is definitely my favorite computer RPG, followed closely by FF Tactics (which, while not technically a true RPG, comes close) and any of the FF series. FF7 was mind-blowing, simply because there was really nothing like it before it came out in terms of graphics and immersive experience. Earlier RPGs, like Phantasy Star and the first three FF's were really cool, but #7 redefined what an RPG should be like.
(Sadly, FF8 was a weak follow up. I liked FF9, but I think I'm alone in that one. FFX, of course, was beautiful.)
Morrowind beats FF7 mostly because it's the closest thing I've ever seen to a *true* open-ended game. FF7 may have had a hundred hours of quests, side-quests, and explorable areas; Morrowind has hundreds of hours of content. And with player-based mods, Morrowind is essentially a never-ending story. Not bad for forty bucks.

Pen and Paper DnD beats all. I've been playing that for about 12 years now, started in 2nd grade with AD&D.
