Auto-Designated Attributes? Subject description: Thoughts? |
|
"The biggest change about attributes in Diablo III is that they are not player-customized. Unlike D1 and D2, attributes are automatically designated when a character levels up. As a result all level 50 (for instance) Wizards will have the same strength, dexterity, willpower, and vitality as each other."

Im not sure what to think about this yet...

Easier to make you char now, less thought needed. Primo!
They did it because they didn't like seeing
"Str:Enough for gear
Dex: Enough for max block if you want
Vit: Rest
Nrg: None"

I liked the current way better. That way you could maybe wear a weapon a couple levels earlier if you chose to sacriface life into strength for more damage. Another example would be pumping dexterity to be able to hit something more often but with less damage because lack of invested points in strength, and less life, etc.

Why not just pick our skills too?
Maybe run around and kill stuff for us as well?

They kinda are. They force you to get certain skills that aren't relevant to your character, from what I understood.

Least Energy/Willpower will give % to spell damage now.
Even more so to let us pick our stats.

im ok with it. stat customization was never a huge part of the game. with the exception of ES sorcs and bowzons, about 99% of chars used the same stat layout, with the only variation being max block or not. with this system, sorcs would automatically get more mana than other classes, and amazons would automatically get more dex than other classes, so what's the big deal?
ALSO, now +str and +dex on items will actually play a role other than being able to put more points in vita. now you might actually need the +str from items to equip other items since you cant put points into str yourself.

Disappointing to me, just a much less versatile system.
I liked being able to optimize a build based on what gear I had and what I wanted to do. From using 10max/ar/6str GCs on a lld barb instead of lifers and still coming out with good health, to maxing str on a kicker to get much higher dmg, maxing dex on a zon, etc.
This is just pointless.... all it does it gets rid of people complaining that they needed a remake for 5stat points, but severly restricts build possibilities at the same time.
Have to see how it goes but the #1 thing I hate in game sequels is when the SEQUEL is dumbed down and allows less versatility to the game. It doesn't matter how good the other changes are, all you notice is that you can't do x,y,z anymore. Happened to another series I liked, Homeworld. HW1 had alot more versatility by letting you make custom formations (and if you wanted to spend the time, making 10 fighter groups of 5, putting them in claw formation, then binding them all to a super group.... but they kept the same formation etc). They auto did that for you in HW2 so you didn't HAVE to make custom fighter win setups...... but it also prevented you from making layered point defense spheres around capitol ships, etc. So while the game was much better in alot of ways... these decreased options for customization (+ a the PvP internet connection not working without a patch straight of the box) totally killed the game. Don't think it will have quite as big of an impact on D3..... but between this and their "no rushing" policies they have mentioned I see LLD being severly diminished.

I guess since they are making class specific items this will work out better than it would have in d2. In D2 with this method there would have been tons of items nobody could use just because you couldnt get the strength or dex reqs.
They can now essentially just make an item for the barbarian requiring the strength you will have by default at say lvl 24 and at lvl 24 any barbarian can use it.
As far as dueling goes, this is going to level the playing field immensely. Going into the duel having the same stat lay out as the noob your facing instead of being able to customize your stats for maximum benefits is going to take some getting used to.

They already said weapons/armor are going to be class specific.
Only Wizard/Monk can use staffs.

If this is the case then 'auto' stats makes sense. I have absolutely no problem with this at all. I enjoyed the playing of Diablo 2, not the planning and 'perfecting' of a character. So maybe this game will have some sort of talent based playstyle rather than having the best gear/stat/skill layout and running around destroying everything.
But I'm probably just dreaming...

I wasn't too bothered about the auto placed stats, but that is bad.
D2 wasnt so bad with the one class specific item each but if nearly all items are class specific (or specific to just a few classes) then the number of viable builds will go down a bit. All characters will be geared up much more similarly than they already are.
