PostPosted: Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:31 pm    Post subject:  So I...
Subject description: am joining the Army

Just got back from MEPS, and took my ASVAB. I took the pre ASVAB yesterday and got an 84, today I took the real one and scored an 85. Which halfway shocked me and my recruiter, since usually people score anywhere from 10-20 pts higher than on the actual test (highest score is 99). I went in with the intent of being a Blackhawk mechanic, and after I received my score, it was on the list of jobs, as well as a bunch of other mechanic jobs and computer jobs, but after looking further into the benefits and what you actually do, I decided to not take that job.

Right now, I'm going into being a Health Care Specialist (fancy word for doctor). I'm getting a 16,000$ sign up bonus, and 63,000$ + the GI bill for college. I'm going in for 4 years of active duty, and after that term I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I could either enlist again, go to officer school, become a nurse which would be really easy to do, or become a teacher which would also be very easy to do.

I've not officially sworn in, I go in for my physical on Sunday and leave on Monday (its some overnight thing). Afterwards, so long as I can get my parental consent, my future is pretty much plotted out.

Anybody with knowledge about the Army/Military in general have any advice or things of that nature before it becomes official? Any help is appreciated.

Tagster at CC-Comp was in the Army, and Misc over there is currently in.

I live in a completely different country, so I probably wouldn't be able to help.

Learn your rank structure... bout the only thing you can do pre military training that will help.. next to being physically fit... and just make sure you have a guaranteed job some where in writing, cause the military will try to fuck you, im surprised you didnt look into coast guard or air force... jobs seem to be a little more reliable to get... also if you you narrow your decision down and are sure that you wanna work aircraft maintenence, i'd suggest the marine core, they're air wings are un matched in training and you get treated really well... given you can get into th air wing.. its tough.... whatever you do, just be careful and read everything twice, and make sure everything is clarified before you raise youre right hand.

Yeah, my MOS is in writing, signed for and everything.

I decided to be a 68P, which is Radiologist (the people that take x-ray pictures). Pretty laid back job, difficult AIT, my schooling will be a full year including BT. But honestly, thats not that bad, considering most people at the medical AITs are women

Yeah, except the Health Care Specialist that I was previously signed up for... thats also fancy talk for battlefield medic. I was reading over the job description... and heres pretty much what it said
"If an ally is wounded, you must cover him with your body, secure the area eliminating any hostiles, treat what you can there, then carry him to a secure area for further treatment"
So I decided not to do it, lol.

That was one of my main interests in the medical field. I get all the training I need and I will have more if I want it. Then when I move on to civilian life, I have a job in a field that isn't going to go downhill anytime soon, so I'm pretty set.

Actually, my first job interview when I get out, which is 6 years and 11 months from now, will be in Plano, so I'll be mighty close to your home eh?
But unless you need an MRI, CAT scan, ultrasound, or x-ray, I don't think I'll be much help

some things to be aware of if you arent already.. deployments... they're pretty rough for the army.. but that career field doesnt seem like it would deploy as often as the others... but the deployments are still 12+ months in the AOR... also make sure you do not.. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT flunk out of your technical training... because they will stick you hard.. and it will hurt... you will be doin something you dont wanna do somewhere you dont wanna be... so stay focussed during training.... and as far as basic goes... just be prepared to be tired... constantly... it will suck while youre there.. but everyone i know looks back on it and laughs at the crazy shit that goes on in basic.. you should be fine though

Thats one of the things I'm not too worried about. "Being shipped to Iraq" doesn't really bother me. Of course its easy to say that now, but I think I'm semi-prepared for it.

Yeah, I have 46 weeks of AIT, so theres a lot of time for screw ups. I'm hoping I can convince myself that studying is the main priority, since this does inadvertently have an impact on the rest of my life. I was told you get 3 chances to pass a test, after the 3rd failure you either have to picka new job, or you leave the army. Neither of which I want to do.

I heard the biggest problem is loneliness, on top of constantly being yelled at, and being tired. Butt I've also heard that its pretty hard to fail basic, so I should manage.

yea... its pretty hard to fail basic, i wouldnt say lonliness is a problem... you'll have probably 50 other trainee's in your squad room... and you'll never be alone... home sick may be the word youre lookin for Wink also, you get used to the yelling really... really fast... lol it happens so much within the first 2 or 3 days that by the end of week one it will be second nature to you... but the first time... its pretty shocking... lol... it'll be a blast lookin back on it

You won't know how to act right out of basic. You'll have a lot of crazy memories though, and you'll look back on it in a good way. It really does change you.
