Subject description: please		  
Ok, I borrowed counter strike from my friend. Its the old one, retail version. I want to play it online. after looking around, i decided to go with steam and simply use the key that came along with it.

however, the key was already registered with steam, so i dont think i can go with steam. but I still want to play counter strike. is there anyway that I can play CS online?

No, but if your friend already registered the key login with his account and you should be able to play online.

Can you not just buy an old cheap retail version of half-life, patch it, and download CS for free anymore? That's a shame.

Yeah, I'm sure if you could just use his account somehow you'd have everything up and running.
