Quote:
May 9, 2006 - In addition to the main showcase at Nintendo's conference, the Big N also included final information on system specs for its Wii console. A specific launch date has not been announced, nor has a final price point, but Nintendo did include information on the CPU and GPU, as well as the Virtual Console and communications specifications. The information below is a direct copy from Nintendo's official "Wii Fact Sheet." Enjoy!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch Date and MSRP:
Q4 2006 ($TBA)

Controls:
Intuitive control for anyone using the physical motion of the main Wii Remote, which resembles a television remote control. Up to four Wii Remotes can be connected at once using wireless Bluetooth technology. The wireless signal can be detected within 10 meters of the console. Both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers include a three-axis motion sensor. The Wii Remote also includes a speaker, rumble feature and expansion port, and can be used as a pointer within 5 meters of the screen. The Wii Remote has a power switch, plus pad, A, B, Minus, Home, 1 and 2 buttons. The Nunchuk controller includes an analog control stick and C and Z buttons.

The Look:

Color:
TBA

Media:
A single self-loading media bay will play single- or double-layered 12-centimeter optical discs for Wii, as well as 8-centimeter Nintendo GameCube&153; discs.
Communication: Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This "WiiConnect24" service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii. Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor. Wii also can communicate wirelessly with Nintendo DS&153;.

Virtual Console:
Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo? 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System? (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System? (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

The Specs:
Wii has 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi capability. A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory. Design was optimized with state-of-the-art processing technologies that minimize power consumption, keep the console compact and enable the "sleepless" WiiConnect24 mode.

Graphics Processing Unit:
Being developed with ATI

May 10, 2006 - IGN has learned that Nintendo's potential flagship Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy, will be playable at the the company's E3 2006 booth beginning Wednesday morning. It is not yet known if the game will be open to all showgoers or if it will alternatively be tucked away behind closed doors.

Super Mario Galaxy promises improved graphics, a compelling new theme involving the universe, and a wide variety of enhanced platformer mechanics -- all made possible with the added power and new controller of Wii.
IGN will be playing Super Mario Galaxy on Wednesday. Look out for our full impressions.

May 9, 2006 - Nintendo announced its new console will be connected to the internet 24 hours a day.

At its press conference today, Iwata explained Nintendo plans to deliver content to the system even when it's not powered on. For instance, while you're snug in your bed, friends can deliver new items to you for Animal Crossing.

Stay tuned for more news about Nintendo's plans from their press conference, currently in progress.

Quote:
May 9, 2006 - Nintendo today unveiled the final piece in the Wii controller puzzle: a built-in speaker placed in the middle of the freehand-style pointer.

The square audio outlet is used to deliver "in-your-hand" aural immersion. Since the right-hand Wii-mote is used for direct interaction with objects in the games, Nintendo included the controller speaker to give players direct audio feedback pertaining to do those objects.

For example, when you are casting your lure while fishing in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, you can hear the whirring of the line as you flick the controller forward. Likewise, when you nock your arrow and pull back the bow string in the game, you can actually hear the creaking and more accurately feel the tension on the string.

The quality of the audio output is expectedly limited -- imagine the sound quality from a Nintendo DS speaker.

Additionally, the more finalized version of the controller we were able to try out is significantly improved over the development kit units. Whereas the dev kit controllers were wired and felt a bit flimsy, this new version feels heavier, works wirelessly and displays the same glossy-white "Mac look" as seen in product stills released by Nintendo. The nunchuck remains wired to the freehand pointer, however, as previously shown.

The "clicky" buttons from the dev unit have also been fixed and feel more natural and finished this time around. As unveiled last week, the left-hand nunchuck controller features tilt functionality while the right-hand pointer interacts with a special sensor bar to allow movement ntrol interaction in 3D space. At press time it was unclear whether the Wii-mote would also feature a built-in microphone to enable two-way communication in online games -- but the use of the controller speaker for voice playback is a given.

We'll have more impressions of the Wii controllers after we've tested it with a few different games.

"After school I'm going torun home and play with my Wii." Hm, i think revolution was a much, much, much better name. However, Wii is stil better than PS3, or xbox360, or the like. It's gonna be the beast of this series of consoles.
